Welcome to the Landy Rally  2008 Information Page

ENTRY, ELIGIBILITY & GENERAL INFO

ASSISTANCE & COSTS EN ROUTE: :
Whilst the Organisers and doubtless your fellow Entrants will do their utmost to assist wherever possible, whether medical or mechanical, no official assistance is provided by the Organisers. Entrants are therefore advised to make their own arrangements regarding medical or breakdown insurance cover as necessary.
ADVISORY NOTE: Whether you are in possession of private medical cover or not, when travelling in the EU and outside the community (i.e. Switzerland) it is important that you complete and register a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to receive reduced cost or even free medical treatment in a foreign country.  Actually this is a very simple process.  Merely apply online at www.dh.gov.uk/travellers or by calling the EHIC Application Line on 0845 606 2030 (this equates to a 2 minute call).  Other than your personal details - name/address/date of birth - they will ask for your NHS number (England and Wales), Community Health Index Number (Scotland) or Health and Care Number (Northern Ireland).  Alternatively, you can give your National Insurance Number.
Entrants must also meet all their hotel bills (if applicable), fuel and ferry costs. However, camping fees and tickets to the lunchtime BBQ at Val d'Isére are included in the Entry Fee. Talking of ferries, a good tip is to leave the ticket return date open-ended, that way you can sail whenever you wish. Also, past experience tells us that rushing back on the Saturday following the Friday night prize-giving dinner is not much fun. If you can return on the Sunday, this is so much better - but remember to book the Monday off work!!!

BOFA 4x4 RALLY - RUN IN ASSOCIATION WITH Landy Rally : :
Featuring all makes of 4x4 SUV vehicle whether European, Jap or Jeep, entrants in Bofa 4x4 Rally are in essence competing for exactly the same trophies and prize money as their Land Rover counterparts in Landy Rally as they will run off exactly the same Road Book.
Raising funds for MacMillian cancer charities, "Team Bofa 4x4" will comprise both of all-marque 4x4's and Land Rovers that have competed in previous Mac 4x4 Challenges. However, entry of all "non-Land Rovers" (Jap/Jeep/Euro 4x4's) has to be under the all-marques banner of Bofa 4x4 Rally. In doing so participants will automatically be raising awareness and funds for MacMillian cancer charities. If this is for you, then simply download an Entry Form within this website and post to the Organiser in the normal way (found via an ENTER button on the homepage). Also see VEHICLE ELIGIBILITY - BOFA 4x4 RALLY within this page for further details.

THE BOTTOM LINE - WHAT YOU GET FOR YOUR MONEY! :
The bottom line, which I've moved up here as it is so important, is as follows:-
The £660 entry fee covers:

Basically Landy Rally was conceived as a "low cost" social event for like-minded people to venture beyond these shores and go enjoy themselves - a "glorified treasure hunt with off-roading thrown in" if you like - and if along the way we can raise a few pennies for good causes, then so much the better.

CHARITABLE CONNECTIONS - ORGANISERS & ENTRANTS: :
Once a 'break even' level of finance is achieved, the Organisers hereby pledge a charitable donation of £2,000 to be split between three or four deserving charities of their choice.
Although not compulsory, the crew of every vehicle are also encouraged to raise funds for a designated charity or good cause; it is a Charity Drive after all ! Yes we would like to see every crew have a charitable link, but this is purely down to individual choice - your call and yours alone!
Should this be the case and you are raising revenue on behalf of a charity/good cause, the following IS compulsory under forfeit of non-starting. By means of vinyl lettering, competitors are required to proudly display the name of their charity/good cause on both sides of their vehicle (any size lettering), plus if so wished, their charity's stickers and/or logos. Remember, this vinyl lettering is only compulsory if a crew "adopts" a charity/good cause to support. See Rules & Regs for more info. (see Rule No.6 in Rules & Regs)

COMPETITIVE TASKS: :
Throughout the event Competitors will tackle a variety of tasks, nothing too taxing, just simple "treasure hunt" type tasks on the road. That said, they are extremely important as the points awarded add to a cumulative total to establish the overall rally winner.
In addition, bonus points will also be awarded daily at Officials discretion for (in no particular order) the following:-

Explained even better, it's an excuse to get away from our humdrum lives for a week or so and join like-minded enthusiasts at a series of parties! This being the case, if you can help a fellow entrant along the way - DO SO. Should it mean for instance towing them for the best part of a day, the Organisers will ensure that the majority of the points you may have missed out on while performing your .mission of mercy. can and will reimbursed in some way. Just how and to what degree is solely at the discretion of the Organisers, suffice to say we will be fair as possible to all concerned.
Like we say, if you can help - DO SO!
Moreover, if another team helps you out along the way and deserves credit for their unselfish actions, tell us!

DRIVERS: :
Throughout the event daily Stages, a minimum of two fully qualified drivers must be present on board at all times.

DRIVER'S OFF-ROAD EXPERIENCE: :
Basic off-road training is strongly recommended. Once again, although we describe the terrain to be tackled as "gentle off-roading", knowing what to do ascending or descending hills is essential stuff - especially in The Alps. Even on tarmac you are after all driving 2+ tons of metal, so attending a course with those who know will be money well spent. By all means phone the Organisers pre-event for recommendations.

ELIGIBILITY: :
For whatever reason, the Organisers retain the right to refuse entry, also to disqualify and/or expel teams during the event itself.

ENTRY FEE: :
£660.00 per vehicle inclusive of driver & co-driver. NOTE: Up until January 2008, the fee was £450. This increase is because now all the campsite fees (incl. electric hook-up) for eight nights from Friday 12th Sept 2008 to Friday 19th Sept 2008 are now included. Also included are two tickets to the lunchtime BBQ at Val d'Isére.
An additional £170 per adult crew member thereafter. NOTE: This fee also includes camping fees for eight nights (as one extra person at the campsite) plus one ticket to the lunchtime BBQ at Val d'Isére. All additional adult crew members will be afforded exactly the same privileges as the driver & co-driver (i.e. event T-shirt, prize-giving dinner, etc.) and likewise must abide by the Rules & Regulations laid down for every entrant. In fairness to other Entrants who may only have a crew of two, whilst additional adult crew members may join in all of the tasks, the only stipulation is they cannot drive their team vehicle on any of the daily Stages. They may drive at all other times.
FREE ENTRY for children under 12 yrs old before 13th September 2008 (no additional privileges).
Maximum crew size is four adults, however, this can be increased with the presence of children under 12 yrs old in a designated seat with a seat belt (for the purposes of this event 12 yrs old and above is classed as an adult).
To guarantee an entry, a 50% non-returnable deposit of £330 (in all circumstances other than actual cancellation of the rally within the Organisers control) plus £85 for each additional crew member is required when booking. Booking confirmation will be returned by post within 14 days or less. The remaining balance of £330 (and £85 per each additional crew member) is required by 1st July 2008 or without exception deposit will be forfeited. This is unavoidable as a reserve list will operate thereafter.
To qualify for FREE ENTRY for children under 12 yrs old, please phone Tom McGuigan on 01202 421284 or 07958 216266 for details.

EQUIPMENT: :
See Landy Rally Rules & Regs page for full list (Rule No.1 in Rules & Regs)

FIRST AID AND MECHANICAL EXPERIENCE: :
Basic first aid and mechanical training are both strongly recommended. As Organisers we will obviously assist wherever possible, and doubtless so will your fellow competitors, but ultimately the health of your vehicle and crew is down to YOU, hence the advisory recommendation for adequate training.

Landy Rally 2008: :
Up until a cut off date of 1st July 2008, entrants in the inaugural Landy Rally 2007 will be given priority to participate in Landy Rally 2008.

NAVIGATION: :
Competitors will be issued with a Road Book at the beginning of each day's Stage. Coupled with the mandatory Michelin maps, this should be more then adequate to navigate the routes and complete the daily tasks. Should you have GPS fitted, you.re welcome to use it of course, but as a reconnoitre has been carried out in a survey vehicle without GPS, at times electronic mapping may well hinder your progress at completing tasks rather than assist! Besides, with some of the more 'off the beaten track' routes, it will be useless anyway and will only confuse the situation. Unless on major routes, our recommendation is don.t bother!!!

PETS/ANIMALS: :
Not allowed

PRIZES: :
1st£1,250 + trophy
2nd£750 + trophy
3rd£500 + trophy
4thplaque
5thplaque
plus individual awards for Team Spirit, Best Dressed Vehicle, Navigation and suchlike.

REGISTRATION: :
Competitors must produce their vehicle and personal documentation between 07.00 - 09.00 hrs 13th September 2008 at Le Sybilien Restaurant, 9 Digue Gaston Berthe, 62100 Calais.
Documentation comprises of the vehicle's MOT, driver's Certificate of Insurance and Green Card (if applicable), plus Driving Licences of the driver and co-driver. Owners not producing these documents will not be allowed to start and will not receive a refund (see Rule No.2 in Rules & Regs)

REGISTRATION - LATE ARRIVAL AFTER 10.00 hrs: :
The official starting time is 10.00 hrs. As Organisers it would be irresponsible to let Competitors take part without verification of vehicle documentation, driver's licences, etc., so please make certain you register at Le Sybilien Restaurant between 07.00 - 09.00 hrs.
However, not wishing to leave anybody behind, should any team feel they will be late for registration or the actual start due to breakdown, delayed ferries, illness or whatever, PHONE THE RALLY ORGANISERS ON 07958 216266 SO WE CAN ASSESS THE SITUATION.

ROAD BOOK: :
As the pre-event reconnoitre is always carried out in a right-hand drive vehicle fitted with a standard milometer and tripmeter, and 99% of the entrants. vehicles are also be fitted with milometers and tripmeters, it follows that all distances in the Road Book will also be listed in miles. However, although not quite so accurate as they are simply conversions from miles to kilometres, the Road Book also contains kilometre readings for any entrants who may have a .kilometre tripmeter. fitted.

ROUTE: :
One thing that all 1-week European driving events have in common is the incredibly high amount of motorway miles in the itinerary.  They are included for a reason of course, to simply shorten the day driving-wise, but they are also extremely frustrating.  Not only do crews see non-descript countries flash past at 80+ mph, as if to rub salt into the wounds they also have to pay for the privilege!  In the case of French toll autoroutes, this can be very costly indeed.
We the Organisers of Landy Rally feel that being motoring enthusiasts, you the participants would much prefer to spend an extra couple of hours behind the wheel and enjoy what you are seeing and experiencing, rather than rush to the evening stopover without having 'enjoyed the day's drive'. That's why we insist on a minimum of two drivers on board at all times, so fatigue should not be too much of a problem. After all, driving is the very reason for entering the event in the first place!
This being the case, motorway miles will be included (including toll routes) but only where absolutely necessary to make up time for particular tasks or exceptional routes driven that day -  and even then wherever possible you will have a choice between autoroutes and nationals. Striking a balance between challenging mountain roads and boring motorway miles is what it's all about.

SCRUTINEERING: :
This will take place from 07.00-09.00 hrs adjacent to Le Sybilien Restaurant. Let's not forget, as Landy Rally is a non-speed event so scrutineering will comprise of a simple basic safety check, plus inspection of compulsory equipment (see Rule No.1 in Rules & Regs)
In preparation, please make sure of the following:-

  1. Towing points. Although Landy Rally involves no extreme off-roading (far from it), entrant's vehicles must have adequate towing points front and rear to which a rope/strap/winch cable can be attached. Furthermore, if a vehicle's towing points are deemed to be dangerous  i.e. weak towing eyes, rusty mounts, etc. your vehicle will fail Scrutineering and will be disqualified. If unsure about your vehicle's towing points, make certain you check them out with an independent Land Rover or 4x4 dealer who specialises in off-roading (main dealers just wouldn.t understand!). By all means phone the Organisers pre-event for recommendations. The Organiser's decision on this matter is final with no refund for failure. BE WARNED!!! (see Rule No.10 in Rules & Regs)
  2. An important requirement is to make certain your vehicle's battery (or batteries) are well secured. Although we will be undertaking gentle off-roading, the side to side rocking motion has in the past caused loose batteries to start engine fires, something we would rather like to avoid!
  3. Although not a failure at scrutineering, please ensure that all internal equipment is stowed securely.

START: :
The official start is at 10.00 hrs 13th September 2008 directly outside Le Sybilien Restaurant.

TEAM COMPETITION NUMBERS: :
Sorry, but competition numbers are not permitted as they can be viewed by Continental Police Forces as 'provocative'. With so many Gumball/Cannonball type speed events held within Central Europe these days, the treat of expulsion from a country merely for having competition numbers displayed on a vehicle is quite frankly a risk we don't want to take!

VEHICLE ELIGIBILITY - Landy Rally: :
Any make or model of road legal Land Rover vehicle is eligible to enter Landy Rally. This includes Forward Control, Range Rover, Discovery, Freelander, etc.  plus all .foreign-built. Land Rovers such as Santana and Minerva or hybrids/space-frame buggies. Providing the vehicle has an identification VIN plate to prove its Lode Lane origins, it will be eligible for Landy Rally regardless of engine make or modifications. If unsure, ask the Organiser beforehand.

VEHICLE ELIGIBILITY - BOFA 4x4 RALLY: :
Regardless of whether a vehicle is of Japanese/American/Asian/European manufacture, then via Bofa 4x4 Rally it is also eligible. The only stipulations are that (a) it must be a dedicated SUV 4x4, not merely a car with a four-wheel-drive system fitted (b) the vehicle weighs no more than 3.5 tonnes, and (c) the team must run under the banner of Bofa 4x4 Rally. Some of the marques eligible include Mitsubishi, Toyota, Jeep, Volvo, Isuzu, Mercedes, Suzuki, BMW, Kia, Hummer, Hyundai, VW, Lexus, Vauxhall, Nissan, Ford, Dodge, Porsche, Mazda, Chevrolet, Daihatsu, GMC, Honda and so forth. Once again, ask beforehand if unsure.

THE ORGANISER RETAINS THE RIGHT TO AMEND OR ALTER THE ITINERARY, EVENT INFORMATION OR RULES & REGULATIONS AS NECESSARY.
